this one is super good at printing things like stickers, posters, photos, and anything else that needs good color accuracy or a wide format (20" max).

If you're printing with regular paper on black and white, use the Brother HL-L2340DW. if you're printing with regular paper on color, and you can actually get it working, use the Brother HL-4570CDW.

printing

using the top feed

when printing any size in landscape, put the paper in the top feed in a portrait orientation, the printer will handle it for you. After inserting paper, use the blue guardrail slider to gently clamp the edges. After that see the next heading to ensure the printer actually uses this paper.

printing from the right tray

if you do not have a tray selection setting from your device, the printer may not use the right tray to draw paper from. if you do not provide it a tray directive, it will automatically select one based on the paper size setting for each input tray. If multiple trays share the same paper size setting when you send the print job, it will select it according to an internal hierarchy of (afaik) the back tray (cassette 1), the front tray (cassette 2), and then the top feed. You almost certainly want the top feed, so on the printer go to Settings > Printer Settings > Paper Source Setting > Paper Setup and make sure Cassettes 1 and 2 do not share the paper size you want, then set Rear Paper Feeder to the size you will print on.

linux

the printer should just show up automatically. if not,

  1. install Avahi and the mdns nss module if you don't have them. enable & start the avahi service, and also configure nsswitch.conf to use Avahi. you may not have to do these steps on a lot of distributions
  2. install and enable CUPS
  3. add the printer to CUPS using either your desktop environment's integration (like KDE system settings printers menu) or the CUPS administration webserver. use IPP Everywhere, do not install a printer-specific driver.
  4. that should be it! profit?? 🎉

macos

the printer should just show up automatically. if not,

  1. open up "Printers & Scanners" and click "Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax..."
  2. switch to the "IP" tab and type the full address of the printer (dvhkepsoninkjet.int.devhack.net)
  3. choose "AirPrint" from the dropdown next to "Protocol:"
  4. that should be it! profit?? 🎉

windows

yikes. maybe windows update will just pull the driver? if not, you can use some proprietary shit from Epson: https://epson.com/Support/Printers/All-In-Ones/ET-Series/Epson-ET-8550/s/SPT_C11CJ21201?review-filter=Windows+11#driver

mobile

both iOS and Android are natively supported. just look for /dev/hack Epson Inkjet in your print menu.

refills

does the printer need paper or ink? well you've found the right place!!

paper

there are 3 different ways to load paper

paper tray

this is the tray on the top near the rear of the printer. it allows you to place the largest paper widths and is best suited for impromptu prints on paper of very different sizes.

cassette 1

this is the gray tray under the flip down cover on the front of the printer. this supports the smallest paper size and is typically used for individual photo or cd/dvd printing.

cassette 2

this is the white tray attached to the flip down cover on the front of the printer. this is what should be refilled with typical A4 paper for the vast majority of prints.

ink

DO NOT REFILL THIS PRINTER IF YOU DON'T KNOW HOW!! ASK AMBER IF YOU NEED HELP!!

this printer uses bottles of Epson 552 EcoTank Ink bottles instead of cartridges. this reduces plastic waste, increases capacity, and makes it so they can't DRM the shit out of it :P

here's a vid of epson filling the tanks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JtoZ_bqS6y0
