Vouching is a generic mechanism for bringing a new person into various groups at /dev/hack.

To become a ${CONTRIBUTOR_ROLE_NAME} at /dev/hack, you should get two current ${CONTRIBUTOR_ROLE_NAME}s in good standing to vouch that you are someone who will be excellent and contribute to the space. This is a relatively low-key coherence check designed so that whatever decision the space makes receives an extra set of eyes, and might just come down to the person that you asked to do something double-checking with another person.

Vouching is used for both formal processes like Becoming a Member and for smaller access requests, such as getting the server room door code or getting an account for HomeAssistant to control the lights.

Vouching Eligibility

To vouch for someone, you should:

  • Be in good standing, i.e., not be on the AskToLeave/Current list, banned from /dev/hack, etc.
  • Believe that the person would also be a good ${CONTRIBUTOR_ROLE_NAME}.
  • Take some interest in guiding someone through it all! For example, to vouch for folks interested becoming a member, consider showing up to the member meeting and introducing them to the rest of the membership.
