Matrix
/dev/hack operates a Matrix homeserver that acts as a central hub for communication.
Clients
This section is not specific to /dev/hack and is provided to head off some of the most common pain points that members of community have experienced when switching to Matrix from other chat platforms. There are many opinions on which client to use. It's tricky because they all suck in different ways. This section attempts to provide a quick overview of what you need to know to get started, but is by no means comprehensive.
Matrix.org maintains a list of clients. If you want to play around with different clients, go there and skip this section.
Boring clients that will probably work:
- Desktop: Element Desktop or Element Web if you don't want to install anything
- Mobile: ElementX
Accounts
You don't need a /dev/hack matrix account to join our matrix.
If you have an account on /dev/hack services: Point your client at homeserver devhack.net
(or matrix.devhack.net
if that doesn't work)
If you do not have an account on /dev/hack services: Pick a public matrix server and register an account on it. You can usually do this from your matrix client.
Rooms
There are many rooms, most in a "space". Anyone in the space can see most of the rooms. devhack.net accounts are automatically added to the space and the main room. If you're using a different homeserver, come to #lobby:devhack.net and ask for an invite to the space. You may be asked to show up in person at least once before being allowed into the rest of the matrix rooms, unless you have already been invited to our rooms on another platform.
