Entering The Space

Revision as of 17:43, 14 April 2025 by Maia (talk | contribs) (Add edge case when guests stay past event end time; light copyediting)

Members have 24/7 access to /dev/hack, while guests can visit whenever the space is open and there are people to let them in.

Guests

Whether or not you are a member, you are welcome to visit /dev/hack and use (and make contributions to) the space. Guests are welcome when we are open, typically when at least one of these conditions is true:

A two-line POS scree, modified to display a doorbell alert
Everyone is welcome at /dev/hack, whether if you are a member or just visiting!
  • The space is open the public (e.g., Open Hack Night. See Kinds of "Open" below.)
  • Someone is present (check door status on website) and willing to give a tour. You may need to press the doorbell and wait.
  • They are accompanied by a member, who is responsible for them.

During calendared public events, we try to hold the door open. Try the door first, but if you can't get in, press the doorbell button then the "#" key and someone will get you as soon as possible. If you want to check out an event that isn't marked public and you don't know anyone going, join the Matrix lobby or email us ahead of time!

Visitors can only use chat commands to unlock the door if and only if there are members in the space.

If you aren't a member, and you're the last one in the space, a mistake has been made. Please follow the Closing Checklist to the best of your ability.

Kinds of "Open"

The space is considered "open" when there are:

  • Public events. They are typically listed on our calendar. Guests are welcome to stay until either the listed end time or until the remaining members no longer wish to chaperone, whichever comes later.
  • People open to tour/host. A member is here hacking and open to chaperoning new and old guests.
  • Private events. They are organized by members and may be members-only or for another small group.

It is possible that even if the space shows as "doors open" on our website, a /dev/hack member might not actually be present in the space (for example, when only SCN occupants are in the building) or may not be available to chaperone visitors at that time.

Members

Members have 24/7 access to the space. To get into the building, you can:

  • Tap in with member card.
  • Use a door code specifically provisioned for you.
  • Run !open in Matrix or /openthefrontdoor in Telegram.
  • Use the landlord-assigned door code if you know it (not preferred, aka The Forbidden Code).
  • Use the Home Assistant web UI to poke the relay if you have the secrets (not preferred, also is it worth it?).
  • Bug someone to let you in, particularly if you want the back door.

If you are the first person in the space, the gate will likely be armed and you must disarm the alarm system within a minute. Refer to the onboarding wiki on how to disarm the alarm.

If the external internet in the space is down, group chats won't be able to open the door (obviously). if inter-space internet is working member cards & codes should still work.

If internal internet / WiFi is down, TOTP codes should still work & the hardcoded doorcode will too, but nothing else will.
