Becoming a Member
/dev/hack is actively seeking members who can support the existence of a hackerspace in our region (full blurb here)! If you'd like to become a member, there is an informal process that involves getting vouches from two members, a brief wait (until the next member meeting), attendance at a member meeting, and setting up your membership benefits.
Before applying

In order to be considered for membership, you must show up physically at the space at least once. This allows you to meet current members and get a feel for our community.
Please get to know us before applying for membership. All our activities are free and open to the public!
Step 1: Make your interest known!
To begin the becoming a member process: ask about it! Either to the general chats, or more preferably to folks you've met within the space.
Existing members are directed & encouraged to steward your interest along to other members and additionally, vouch for you if they believe you are a good fit for the space and display excellency. Once you have two vouches, they will add you to a list of prospective members to be read out at the next member meeting.
Your common name or alias will be used, but let us know if you'd like a change in alias. Note that while it is unlikely, vouches can be retracted at any time before the member meeting.
Step 2: Wait until the next member meeting
After you've shown interest and have been vouched for, wait! Members will hear about pending prospective members from your vouches on Matrix. This gives a chance for members to discuss prospective member applications if desired or use the veto process. This happens on the #member-business channel on Matrix, for a grace period of at least a week and typically until the next member meeting.
Step 3: Applications are read out
At each member meeting (check devhack.net for the next date), we read out the names/aliases of all prospective members whose applications have passed the grace period. We'll also mention who vouched for each candidate and note if any vetoes have been received.
We strongly encourage prospective members to attend the meeting where their membership will be considered. This gives you the chance to introduce yourself if you'd like, answer any questions that might come up, and see how our member meetings work. If we somehow miss reading your application, please speak up!
If no one exercises their veto power before or during the meeting, the prospective member is automatically approved and you can complete the final steps to become a member right after the meeting ends.
If an official veto is raised, your membership will be put to a vote, requiring approval by a majority of existing members (50% + 1).
In the case that a membership is not approved, this should not be considered a permanent ban from membership. The prospective member can come up for a vote again next member meeting, assuming they continue to have two vouches.
Step 4: Pay dues and get set up
After membership is approved, we will give you instructions on how to subscribe for dues ($50/month). After this step is complete, you would be considered a member. Welcome \o/.
This would be a great time to be trained for opening up and closing down the space, as well as reviewing the onboarding docs. Ask for a buddy to help you get started with your membership!
